Getting Dirty With High-Hand

Lately, I’ve been thinking about dirt. Not just soil, but dirt—the kind that fills your hands, catches under your nails, and feels like a handshake with nature. There was a time when nearly everyone felt connected to it, this grounding bond with the earth beneath our feet. We grew up watching plants take root, marveling at the quiet magic of food emerging from the land. Now, though, large-scale farming and concrete jungles have pulled many of us away from that connection. Growing food has become more mechanical than meaningful.

At High-Hand, we’re here to bring back the magic of getting dirty.

In the coming seasons at Maple Rock Gardens we will be looking over fields filled with rows of lavender, fruit trees heavy with apples and mandarins, towering sunflowers, and fresh seasonal vegetables—I’m reminded of why this all began. Maple Rock is more than a farm; it’s a living testament to the grounding connection between dirt and dreams. It’s my vision for this place to be a welcoming patch of earth, where food isn’t just grown but respected, where people come to dig in, to gather, and to reconnect with the beauty of well-loved land.

This vision is digging deeper roots with the help of our Farmer Rob. We understands that true farming is about being knee-deep in the dirt, unhurried, and tuned in to the rhythms of the land. We grow not just food but a connection—from our farm to your table at High-hand. Together, we’re preparing to fill your plates at the cafe with fresh fruits and vegetables straight from our fields. You can say it’s a living lunch.

And soon, we’re inviting you to join us at Maple Rock. Take a walk through our gardens, get a little dirt on your hands, and feel that connection firsthand. We’re planning quarterly events where you can see what we are planting, nurturing, and harvesting in the spirit of High-Hand.
